5 Tips for Preventing Bed Bugs

While many people think of hotels when they think of bed bugs, the truth is, a bed bug infestation can happen to anyone. Here’s how you can protect your home from bed bugs.

Know the Warning Signs

The warning signs of a bed bug infestation include:

  • Itchy bite marks on your skin, especially in areas that are exposed when you’re sleeping
  • Reddish or rusty-looking stains on mattresses or bedsheets
  • Sheets or mattress have small, dark spots that resemble ink
  • You can see tiny eggs, eggshells, and/or shed skins
  • A musty odor

If you notice any of these warning signs of bed bugs, call an exterminator right away. Make sure to inspect your pet’s bed, too.

Use Protective Covers

Enclose your mattress and your box spring in a protective plastic cover. The cover will shield your bed and also make bed bugs easier to see. However, if your mattress or box spring already has bed bugs, it’s better to dispose of it altogether.

Inspect Any Secondhand Furniture

While buying secondhand furniture is a great way to save money, it also has the risk of bed bugs. Before you bring home secondhand furniture, inspect it for signs of bed bugs and clean it thoroughly before placing it inside your home.

Vacuum Often

Vacuum your carpets and rugs at least once a week. If you think you may have been exposed to bed bugs, vacuum every day. Immediately dispose of the vacuum contents in a sealed plastic bag. If you do not empty your vacuum cleaner right away, the bed bugs can spread.

Get Rid Of Clutter

A cluttered room gives bed bugs a good place to hide. Reducing clutter in your home eliminates hiding places for bed bugs.
